DUMONT, NJ — A high school teacher hosted a co-ed sports clinic at Grant Elementary School in Dumont so children could have recreational fun while teachers' conferences were in session.

“It’s so they don’t drive grandma crazy and so they can sleep well in their beds tonight,” said David Cieplicki, who has operated the program the past five years.

The program is $100 per child and includes pizza for lunch on both days.

Cieplicki, who is an award-winning girls’ basketball coach and resident of Haworth, has first- though fifth-graders run basketball drills or engage in contests, guided practices, or a tag game called “octopus.”

“Last year it rained, which made it tough," Cieplicki said. "I’m exhausted by the end of the day.”

“It’s a little hard to get up at 8 a.m., but we like to volunteer,” said K.J. Martoral, a Dumont High School senior who was there for his first time.

Who needs technology when you have tag?

“We won’t even go there,” Cieplicki said. “This gives them something fun to do.”
