BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Emily Hughes, an eighth-grade student at Roy W. Brown Middle School, was the first-place winner in Optimum Community and Olympusat's 8th Annual Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest.
During the presentation, Hughes read aloud her winning essay about Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope.
Students in the tri-state area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less and to name a Latino, past or present, with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why.
Hughes' essay was chosen from more than 400 in the middle school category, and she was awarded a laptop computer, as well as a proclamation from special guest Mayor Norman Schmelz.
