Wounds that killed Dumont soldier were in “noncombat incident,” Defense Dept. says

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST : The Defense Department announced that Army Spc. Ryan A. Gartner, 23, recently of Dumont, died Tuesday of “wounds sustained in a noncombat incident” while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The release did not elaborate.

Gartner was assigned to the 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said in a brief release issued late Friday.

His mother was expecting him home in time for his 24th birthday in April when she received a trunk filled with Gartner’s belongings, his grandmother said. She got word a short time later that her son had been killed.

Gartner had spent time in Dumont following his childhoood in Aransas Pass, Texas. After attending Dumont High School, where he was in the Junior ROTC, he earned a GED in 2004 from the New Jersey National Guard Challenge Youth Program at Fort Dix, then joined the Army.

His body was flown to Delaware and was headed on to Texas for a military funeral there sometime in the current week, his grandmother told the Corpus Christi Caller Times and KIIITV in Texas.

“His mother got a call and they told her ‘Your son died a brave man’,” Gartner’s grandmother, Mariana Soto-Mota, told the Caller Times . “Everyone is so upset right now.”
