Pro wrestling fans ID superstar ‘Nick Gage’ as bank robber

He was the first man to win the Combat Zone Wrestling championship, has competed in more CZW matches than anyone, and is its only Grand Slam Champion (World Heavyweight, Tag Team, Iron Man, and Ultraviolent Underground): Now police have identified wrestling superstar Nick Gage as the prime suspect in a South Jersey bank holdup — thanks to wrestling fans.

Authorities say Nicholas W. “Nick Gage” Wilson, 30, of Camden, took $3,000 from a PNC Bank branch in Collingswood on Wednesday afternoon after threatening to shoot a teller.

A surveillance camera captured clear footage of Wilson leaving the bank, police said, adding that wrestling fans confirmed it was the CZW wrestler known as “The Man,” “The Future of Hardcore” and “Nick [Expletive] Gage”, who won matches in Japan and Germany earlier this year and was a huge favorite at the last two “Carnage Cup”s.

CZW issued a statement today saying it has “no direct knowledge of any alleged wrongdoings by Nick Gage.”

“We firmly discourage any fans from emulating any of the actions alleged,” the statement says. “We also hope that if these accusations are true that Nick will turn himself over to authorities.”

Gage, while becoming one of CZW’s biggest stars, made short work of opponents such as Mad Man Pondo, The Backseat Boyz, and The Tough Crazy Bastards, sometimes tag-teaming with his brother, fellow CZW wrestler Justice Pain.

In his last match, Gage lost his CZW Ultraviolent Underground title in Philadelphia.

Early in the Dec. 11 match, “special referee” Drew Gulak (another wrestler) made Gage remove specially-made glass (not brass) knuckles, and dtook away a staple gun, a hammer and a pizza cutter. Gage immobilized Gulak with a “chokebreaker,” and the match continued without him.

That left Gage free to use a barbed wire bat and eventual winner Yuko Miyamoto a wiffle ball bat covered in thumbtacks.

The brawl spilled into the men’s room, the merchandise area and, eventually the VIP area, where Gage tossed Miyamoto off a balcony. Back in the ring, Miyamoto run Gage’s bell with a “sitout Tombstone.” With his opponent groggy on the mat, Miyamoto opened a ladder in the corner of the ring, climbed to the top and did a “moonsault” onto Gage, ending the match.

Gage, whose signature moves include the diving headhunt, the facewash, the fallaway slam and the piledriver (sometimes while applying a double underhook), wasn’t heard from publicly again until Wednesday’s incident.
