YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Bergenfield police arrested a drunk driver whose out-of-control SUV smashed three other cars and split a utility pole as it careened across the sidewalk and into a New Bridge Road driveway.
Randy R. Lora, 22, of Teaneck told police he was fine when they found him standing outside the wreckage – including debris strewn across the road, two struck street signs and a damaged garbage can – in the front yard of 149 New Bridge Road, Bergenfield Police Chief Michael Carr said early this morning.
Carr said his officers “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath,” conducted a field sobriety test and arrested Lora following the crash, which occurred just before 1 a.m. yesterday.
Lora’s red, 4-door Mitsubishi had to remain there until PSE&G workers could cut power to potentially live wires, the chief said. Nearby were two severely damaged vehicles: a Jeep and a Honda Civic.
Police released Lora to the custody of a relative 3 ½ hours later, Carr said.
He is scheduled for a March 20 Municipal Court hearing on summonses of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving (for driving on the sidewalk) and failing to yield.
