Don’t be a victim of Bergen car burglary spree

PUBLIC SAFETY: It’s a suburban epidemic with a simple cause and cure: Car burglars continue to plunder unlocked vehicles, taking whatever they can get.

One of the worst in recent memory occurred in Saddle Brook, where 18 victims lost valuables to the same thief.

This morning, New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro sounded the call for vehicle owners to simple lock their cars, vans and SUVs.

Otherwise, they become easy targets for thieves who do nothing more than walk down streets, or through parking lots, trying door handles.

Papapietro cited three vehicle burglaries from over the weekend, which left the victims without GPS devices, computer discs, change, school books — even a spare tire.

Then there was a case in Saddle Brook:

People “shoud be careful not to leave valuables in their vehicles,” Papapietro said. “Valuables stored in the truck are vulnerable also if the vehicle is unlocked, as most vehicles are equipped with a trunk release on the dashboard.”
