Bergenfield Man Charged With Threatening To Blow Up Elementary School

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Bergenfield police arrested a local man who they said threatened to blow up an elementary school Tuesday morning, prompting a district-wide lockdown, followed by a shelter in place, authorities said.

Officer Daynel Ozorio located 48-year-old Edgar Perez and took him into custody on New Bridge Road and Greenbriar Street after the alert went out just before 9 a.m., Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said.

Moments earlier, Perez approached a Lincoln Elementary School employee in the parking lot and "stated that he wanted to blow up the school," Rabboh said.

He then walked away.

"Officers searched the area of the school and did not observe anything suspicious," the captain said.

They also went to Perez's house, got permission from his mother to search it but found nothing, he said.

Perez was being held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.

The shelter in place was lifted around 11 a.m.
