A 66-year-old Bergenfield man found bleeding and disoriented outside his home was charged with cutting his wife and himself with a razor in an assisted suicide attempt.

Police responding to a report of a disoriented man needing medical attention found John Humbert behind his W. Church Street apartment just before 9 a.m. on Saturday, Detective Cathy Madalone said this morning.

He had “partially healed wounds consistent with having been inflicted with a cutting instrument” that he admitted giving himself, she said.

Inside the home, they found 62-year-old Joyce Humbert also cut and bleeding, the captain aid.

The mentally unstable woman was “verbalizing suicidal thoughts,” Madalone said.

Members of the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps and paramedics from Holy Name Medical Center tended to Mrs. Humbert, who was taken to Holy Name, she said.

Her husband, meanwhile, was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center.

He was charged with attempted murder, aiding suicide, aggravated assault and weapons possession.

Humbert remained held on $500,000 bail at BRMC in the custody of Bergen County sheriff’s officers.

Both he and his wife are expected to survive their injuries. She will “be evaluated further by mental health professionals before any release from the hospital,” Madalone said.
