BERGENFIELD, NJ — Bergenfield police took the motto "protect and serve" to new lengths Saturday morning by participating in the Tip-A-Cop program at Red Robin restaurant in Paramus to benefit New Jersey Special Olympics.
“I think it’s great food and great fun,” said Bergenfield Police Chief Cathy Madalone, who joined her officers in donating all of hundreds of patrons tips to the cause.
"Our goal is that athletes' families don't put out any money for training, housing, and uniforms,” said Philip Bellomo, a retired Paramus police officer on Special Olympics New Jersey state committee. “We want to make sure that they aren’t financially burdened by having a loved one participate in the summer games.”
Seton Hall graduates Christine Von Kaplan, Amanda Demeo, Jamie Lynn France and Valeria Grina volunteered at the event, getting drinks, serving fries and busing tables.
“My grandmother got me in contact with Phil and we decided to help out since we’re all free on the weekends,” Von Kaplan said. “We continue serving for our sorority."
“I think the event not only helps our restaurant but police officers as well," said kitchen manager Adolfo Garcia. "Everybody loves to donate. It’s a great opportunity.”
