PARAMUS, N.J. -- Former Paramus Catholic star Jabrill Peppers tested positive for what's known as a dilute sample at the NFL's scouting combine in March, ESPN'S Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon.

The NFL notified all teams in advance of this Thursday's draft, in which Peppers was expected to be a first-round pick.

The NFL tests every draft prospect for drugs. However, if a sample shows water content at a level excessive enough to dilute it -- in other words, enough to mask a drug and beat the test -- the league considers it the equivalent of a positive drug result.

Leagues officials say they consider the level high enough to avoid unintended consequences.

However, Schefter tweeted that a a source with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents the former University of Michigan star, told him that Peppers was sick after flying to Indianapolis from San Diego.

He "has a history of cramping" and "was being pumped with fluids, drinking 8-10 bottles of water before he went to bed," because he was the first athlete to work out for two days at two different defensive positions, Schefter said the source told him.

Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster had a similar result when he was struck with what he thought was food poisoning and drank excessive amount of fluid to recover and rehydrate.

Under Stage One of the NFL policy, Peppers isn't disciplined and is discharged within 180 if he cooperates with a league treatment policy. He also can't have another violation during that time.
