'Mr. Fair Lawn': Cosgrove In Good Spirits After Stroke

FAIR LAWN, N.J. – One of Bergen County’s most beloved public servants, Fair Lawn Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove, remained hospitalized and in good spirits after suffering a stroke over the weekend.

In typical fashion, Cosgrove was online Saturday promoting an upcoming bluegrass brunch to benefit the American Cancer Society moments before he was rushed to The Valley Hospital.

“Have to stay at Valley a little while longer,” he posted on Wednesday afternoon. “Hope to go to rehab [at the Kessler Institute] tomorrow.”

It’s often said about lesser politicians, but Cosgrove has had a long and distinguished career in the borough – where he’s known as “Mr. Fair Lawn.”

Known for his honesty and nearly four-decade devotion to community service, Cosgrove served five consecutive terms as mayor under Fair Lawn’s Council form of government.

The past 14 years, he’s been president of Atlantic Handling Systems, which designs, sells, installs and services conveyor and storage systems.

Some tried to push Cosgrove to run for a District 38 Senate or Assembly seat last winter.

But Cosgrove was having none of it.

Fair Lawn Mayor John Cosgrove told Daily Voice Thursday afternoon that he won't seek the 2017 Republican nomination for a District 38 Senate or Assembly seat.

"I remain extremely flattered by the many party leaders who have sought my nomination and am grateful for their confidence in my leadership," he told Daily Voice.said.

"While much is broken in Trenton and needs strong and dedicated attention,” he said, “I have decided to remain in Fair Lawn to finish my term as Mayor and on Council to ensure the completion of important municipal projects such as our Senior Housing complex.”
