Port Authority PD: Fort Lee DWI Driver Registers 3x Legal Limit On GWB

FORT LEE, N.J. -- A DWI motorist from Fort Lee staggered out of her car after exiting the George Washington Bridge before dawn Friday, then registered three times the legal limit on a blood alcohol test, Port Authority police said.

Kristen J. Lane, 43, kept driving after Officer Ed Berdecia activated his lights and siren to stop her after her white BMW "swerved from side to side, repeatedly crossing over the lines" in front of him on the bridge around 2:30 a.m., the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

Lane, who eventually pulled over after exiting at Fletcher Avenue, had bloodshot, watery eyes, a strong smell of alcohol on her breath and slurred speech, Pentangelo said.

"During a field sobriety test she lost her balance, staggered and steadied herself by holding onto the BMW," he said.

"She was placed under arrest and the BMW was impounded," Pentangelo said. "She was administered a Breathalyzer test and failed, registering more than three times the legal limit."

Police charged her with DWI, as well as traffic violations, before releasing Lane to a responsible adult, he said.
