YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: An unlicensed, uninsured driver arrested for a DUI hit-and-run in Bergenfield turned out to be a parole violator wanted out of New York, authorities said this afternoon.

Irving H. Norman, 28, was pulled over by Bergenfield Officer Marc Rispoli moments after his van struck a parked car on North Washington Avenue around 5:50 p.m. on Friday, Police Capt. Cathy Madalone said.

Rispoli could smell alcohol on Norman’s breath, as well as burnt marijuana on him, Madalone said.

Norman was arrested and taken to headquarters, where police found him carrying six small bags of pot, the captain said.

A computer check turned up the fugitive warrant, she said.

Norman was charged with being a fugitive from justice, two drug possession counts — one involving the intent to distribute it — and being under the influence of marijuana.

Bail was set at $75,000, with a detainer from the New York State Parole Board. Norman remained held in the Bergen County Jail this morning.

Bergenfield police also issued him summonses for:

  • driving while under the influence;
  • refusing to take a breath test;
  • careless driving;
  • leaving the scene of an accident;
  • failing to report an accident;
  • driving without a license driver;
  • not having an insurance card;
  • driving under the influence in a school zone;
  • possession of drugs in a motor vehicle.

A court date was set for Wednesday.
