HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN? Dumont Police Chief Brian Venezio today issued a sketch of a tall, thin assailant who bashed the owner of a popular West Madison Avenue sweet shop in the head during a holdup, in the hope that someone recognizes him and alerts authorities.
He is described as:
• in his mid 20s;
• 6’4″ and 150 pounds;
• with black hair and brown eyes;
• wearing a black and yellow headband with matching sneakers and a black and purple cross earring;
having a quarter-sized bald spot shaved into the back of his head.
As reported exclusively in CLIFFVIEW PILOT last week, the man in the sketch and two accomplices entered S weets of Yesterday (Old Tyme Candy Store), a popular local mom-and-pop shop, around 6:50 p.m. Tuesday.
He paid for an order then bashed the owner in the head with an unknown object when he opened the cash register, Venezio said.
He then grabbed the cash and tried running out the back door, but the storeowners grabbed him. They struggled and he dropped the money.
As all three headed out, one of the others knocked over a candy rack and said, “This is for my f**king brother,” Venezio said.
Police arrived quickly, then canvassed the area while Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
The owner reportedly declined medical attention.
Although officially unconfirmed, the holdup appeared to be the work of the same crew that hit other businesses in town, a police source with knowledge of the crimes told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
Anyone who might know anything about this incident or any other recent holdups or smash-and-grab burglaries in town is asked to call Dumont police:
