BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Bergenfield were searching Tuesday for a couple caught on neighborhood surveillance video planting two branch twigs fastened with tape into the shape of a cross on a family's lawn Monday night.

Detectives don't have corroborating evidence to characterize it as a bias crime, Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said late Tuesday morning.

Oscar Pinones and Beatrice Freidman-Pinones, who live on Momar Drive with their two young children, reported the incident at 9:22 p.m. Monday after being alerted by a neighbor, according to a police report.

"Should there be any reason to conclude that this is a biased incident, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the Office of Bias Crime and Community Relations of the [state] Division of Criminal Justice, will be notified," Rabboh said.

He said his department also would prosecute those deemed responsible "to the fullest extent of the law."
