NEW MILFORD, N.J. — The New Milford Borough Council ruled that the owners of the Milford Arms apartments violated the municipality's rent control ordinance by charging certain end-of-tenancy payments, northjersey.com reports .

Under the borough's rent control ordinance , landlords are prohibited from raising rents by more than 2% a year not including a tax surcharge. Rent increases may only occur once per calendar year.

However, the property manager at the Madison Avenue apartment complex was reportedly charging tenants were being charged a tax-reimbursement at the end of their lease, which was deducted from their security deposit, the article stated.

The borough council passed a resolution finding this practice to be in violation of the municipal ordinance, according to northjersey.com .
