BERGENFIELD, N.J. — A 21-year-old Bergenfield man whose parents died within a month of one another this summer will be able to continue his education thanks to the generosity of others.
Lawrence Gicaro, 21, is grieving the loss of his mother, Natividad, who succumbed in August to a rare bone marrow cancer, and his father, Jovic, who died suddenly at work in early September after complaining of a headache.
As of Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, a GoFundMe account established four days earlier by Gicaro's cousin, Amanda Ocampo, 21, of Englewood, had raised more than $4,700."People our age are used to our parents providing for us and opening doors for different opportunities," Ocampo said. "Now that Lawrence's parents are gone I don’t want him to not have those opportunities — I want him to be able to survive."
Gicaro, who is taking the semester off from Bergen Community College, said he plans on using the proceeds to continue his education and help cover immediate expenses.
"Although it is a tough time for my family and me, I remind myself to stay strong for my mom and dad," he said. "I know they would want me to continue to do great thing with my life and to maintain my positive outlook."
