"I was surprised and happy to see them," said Madalone, who was the department's first female officer in 1994 — and is making history again as the first female chief of a municipal police force in Bergen County.

Brothers Roy Mora, 11, Roger Mora and Robert Mora, both 13, completed Bergenfield’s annual week-long Police Youth Academy with Madalone in early August.

Roger said former borough Police Sgt. Frank Dacosta taught him about the role of a police officer and inspired him to enroll in the program.

“(The Academy) taught us respect, courage and integrity,” said Roger, who recalled completing officers’ orders to do push-ups. “Now, when people say something, I keep saying yes sir, or yes ma’am.”

"I'm looking forward to improving the community relations we already have and creating some new programs," said Madalone, who was sworn into office Sept. 1. "The younger guys have great ideas and I'm looking forward to sitting down with each one to discuss their visions, too."
