RIDGEWOOD, NJ. -- Treating the whole person, not just symptoms, is the goal of Valley Medical Group’s new Center for Integrative Medicine. Director Jodie Katz focuses on combining all appropriate modalities to promote balance in mind, body and spirit.

Dr. Katz answered some questions about the new Center and the practice of integrative medicine:

Q: What is integrative medicine?

A: Integrative medicine is a unique approach to care that focuses on treating the whole person. Functional medicine, which is what I practice, shifts from a focus on disease to one that is focused on system imbalances.

Q. How does a consult with an integrative medicine specialist differ from a traditional primary care physical?

A. We believe that the mind and body naturally incline towards health and well-being. However, when our capacity for resilience is exceeded then illness is the result. By restoring balance, for instance through good nourishment, both physical and psychological, and getting rid of what is causing the imbalances, then health and wellbeing re-emerge. We’ll work with each patient to design a personalized journey to health that combines the best of Western medicine with more natural therapies based on his or her individual needs.

Q. What types of services are offered at the Center for Integrative Medicine?

A. We offer a variety of approaches and services designed to promote wellness, including a complete medical assessment, health and wellness coaching, nutritional counseling, recommendations on vitamins and supplements, as well as energy therapy, meditation and yoga. Our health and wellness nurse coach offers integrative health and life coaching and works with you to identify and achieve your wellness goals. Our integrative nutritionist utilizes functional nutrition, emphasizing healthful eating that is personalized to one’s genetics, lifestyle, environment, and overall health.

Q. Who are the members of the Integrative Medicine team?

A. In addition to myself as Medical Director, our team includes cardiologist Benita Burke. Dr. Burke is board certified in integrative medicine by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and is passionate about incorporating holistic services into cardiovascular care. Maria (Mary) Mazzer, R.N., the Center’s Health and Wellness Nurse Coach is a holistic practitioner certified in holistic nursing and health coaching, an “M” Technique practitioner, a Reiki master and a certified clinical aromatherapy practitioner. Kristen Bradley, R.D is the Center’s integrative nutritionist practicing functional nutrition.
