RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- The Valley Hospital welcomed Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz as the inaugural speaker for its new Women and Heart Disease lecture series, a part of the hospital's Heart Care for Women Program.

Dr. Merz is a thought leader in the field of women and heart disease. Her talk focused on nonobstructive coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in women. Dr. Merz reviewed the signs and symptoms of this elusive disease, along with evidence-based ways to diagnose and treat it. Heart disease is underdiagnosed and undertreated in women, and remains the number one killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year.

Dr. Merz is the endowed chair of Women’s Health for the Women’s Guild and the director of the Barbara Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She is also the director of the Linda Joy Pollin Women’s Heart Health Program, director of the Preventive Cardiac Center, and the chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored WISE (Women’s Ischemic Syndrome Evaluation) initiative.

The event had a great turnout of nearly 100 doctors, advanced practice providers and nurses.
