Three Star Bagels In Fort Lee Snags Honors For 'DVlicious Bagel In Bergen'

FORT LEE, N.J. -- It’s impossible to live here and not have a bagel opinion. The New York area, as everyone knows, is the bagel capital of the world. And yes, it’s worth waiting in line on a Sunday morning to get one of these doughy wonders fresh out of the oven. Toasting, as a bagel purist knows, is not necessary when you buy the very best.

We asked for your favorites and now have five contestants in the running. Each is being profiled this week as part of our ongoing DVlicious contest. Here’s the lowdown on one who made the cut.

Three Star Bagels, 270 Columbia Ave., Fort Lee, (201) 224-3745

What Makes Them Bagelicious: In the same spot for 25 years, Three Stars has maintained a loyal following with its old-fashioned bagels. Its owner estimates they go through 2,500 pounds of flour a week to make them. Customers rave about its breakfast sammies, made with Taylor ham and cheese on a bagel with a side of home fries.

Crazy Flavors: Tradition reigns supreme, with bagels coming in pumpernickel, multi-grain, poppy, salt, sesame and at least 11 other kinds. They have about five kinds of cream cheese spreads, but the customer fave seems to be either veggie or scallion. Olive rates a thumbs-up, too.

Reminder: The contest ends Monday, April 25 at 5 p.m. You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day.
