NEW MILFORD, N.J. — New Milford’s Art Center of Northern New Jersey will present its annual small works show Dec. 4-11.

“Anybody who is an artist builds up a lot of work,” said Ruth Miller, the executive director of the center. “It gives artists a chance to empty their attics and earn some money.”

Over the past eight years, Miller has noticed a changing population among the minorities throughout the area, with an increase in Asian artists.

She said she hopes to see more seniors experimenting with paints and palettes.

Buyers may find works that are no larger than 16 x 20 inches and valued at under $275. When pieces sell, they may be replaced with another piece by the artist for the same $20 submission fee.

Artists may submit up to two entrees. One lucky creator will earn a People’s Choice Award.

The area center was created in Englewood in 1957 by a group of area artists and interested lay people who wanted professional art training.

With help from the Museum of Modern Art, it quickly became an acclaimed school with classes taught by recognized talent.

After a move from Tenafly, the center relocated again 1984 to its current location in New Milford, where it continues to offer classes for people of all ages who are interested in learning how to create fine art in a variety of media.

"We have a charcoal piece in our current exhibit done by a teenager," Miller said. "It is incredible."

Classes are accredited by the New Jersey Department of Education as continuing education credits for professional development for art teachers.
