NEW MILFORD, N.J. — Halloween is intense in New Milford, home of the Nightmare on River Road Haunted Attraction , open through Oct. 30.

Inside the former bowling alley at the Brookchester Shopping Center is 8,000 square feet of sheer terror, delivered compliments of local Boy Scout Troops 291 and 78.

The interior features 21 scenes in 17 rooms as well as connecting hallways that are anything but calm.

“All the walls are created just for the event,” said Matt Kaprielian of New Milford, creative director.

“You’re walking through 100 percent designed and constructed scenes,” he added.

They include Grandma’s House, the Morgue, the Body Bag Room, and much more.

Local electricians, contractors, artists, set designers, and others all volunteered as a huge team to help the Boy Scouts create the fundraising attraction, according to Kaprielian.

“It’s cool for the Scouts to get to scare people, but in the process they’re learning how to use tools, build, and paint,” Kaprielian said. “They’re learning art and design, too. They’re learning hands-on, physical skills.

“Today, with our phones and computers, we lose so much of the tactile skills,” he added. “To bring kids back to reality in this way is a rewarding experience.”

“Nightmare on River Road” is open 6-10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2- 6 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 30.

It is located behind the shopping center at 854 River Road, where there’s a large parking lot just for the event. Just look for the hearse.

Kaprielian also is creative director for Brite Nites 2016 , a haunted hollow outdoor trail lit by 3,000 jack-o-lanterns at Wagner Farm Arboretum in Warren.
