BERGENFIELD, N.J. — When comedian Davin Rosenblatt , a Bergenfield native, does President Donald Trump jokes, he always avoids the easy stuff.
“Like his hair,” said Rosenblatt, 42.
“I try to raise issues and make people think and laugh,” he added. “My job is to bring up things we can all laugh about, regardless of party.”
And he’ll do some of that when he returns to his hometown Feb. 18.
That’s when he’ll perform in the Bergenfield Fire Training Center Annual Beefsteak and Comedy Show.
The event, to take place at St. John’s Conlon Hall on North William Street, benefits the 20-year-old facility.
Being a working comedian is difficult these days, said Rosenblatt, who now lives in Warwick, N.Y.
For one thing, there aren’t many venues in which to perform.
“There used to be so many that you could go out and travel for several weeks at a time,” he said.
“Today you have to diversify.”
In addition to performing, he has his own nationally syndicated iHeartRadio show, Davin’s Den , and he’s written TV show scripts.
For Rosenblatt, service is an important part of his career.
A highlight, he said, was performing for American military servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq and Kuwait in 2009.
He likes working community fundraisers, too.
“I do fundraisers for all sorts of things — police, fire, EMTs, Elks, Knights of Columbus, temples,” Rosenblatt said.
The Bergenfield fire center is a state-certified live burn facility. Though it was started to train borough firefighters, it also rents out space to other area fire departments who need hands-on training.
These days, Rosenblatt said, comics are needed, particularly because the country is divided. He has material from both sides of the political aisle.
“We’re very important now,” he said. “We are the last ones who can really speak truth to power.
“A lot of people are trying to shut down dissenting voices.”
Comedians Rich Carucci and Patty Rosborough also will perform at the Bergenfield Fire Training Center Annual Beefsteak and Comedy Show , which runs 7-11 p.m. Feb. 18.
Tickets to the all-you-can-eat-and-drink event cost $45 and are available from any Bergenfield firefighter or by emailing email@example.com.
The menu features beefsteak, salad, French fries and dessert.
