NEW MILFORD, N.J. — “Clandestine,” an indie film about drugs in suburban neighborhoods, is about to be released worldwide. But New Milford gets to see it first.
The film will air at 8 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Castle Theatre at New Milford High School.
That’s only fitting, said Director David LaRosa of Feenix Films , a Ramsey-based independent film company.
"New Milford embraced our project early on,” he said.
"We filmed significant scenes in a New Milford home and in New Milford High School.”
The multiple-award-winning “Clandestine” is a tense crime thriller that pits law enforcement against the infestation of drugs in a suburban town.
Screenwriter Kate McGrath, also a Feenix Films executive, called the story “disturbingly current.”
“Clandestine” will be released Jan. 31 on several worldwide platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Dish Network, and PlayStation.
Support from New Milford School Superintendent Michael Polizzi made a significant difference to the project, said Feenix Films Treasurer Janina Laino.
"We recognize that the themes in this project have value,” Polizzi said. “The spread of drugs in suburban communities is real and awareness is our best weapon. This film helps spread that awareness."
LaRosa noted that the New Milford Borough Council and police department offered key support.
The cast of “Clandestine” includes New Milford School Board Trustee Christopher Ryan and his wife and about 25 local kids.
Ryan, who also is co-producer, reached out to local parents Jane Castronovo and School Board President Paige Ryan to recruit the kids.
Together, they gathered enough local students to fill a classroom for a key scene.
The Castle Theatre was used to film a key scene featuring veteran film star Tom Sizemore, known for his roles in the hit films “Saving Private Ryan” and “Heat.”
Tickets at the door cost $10 and are available HERE . Part of the proceeds will benefit ongoing upgrades at Castle Theatre.
Filmgoers are invited to come early for dessert and then enjoy the movie.
Doors open at 7 p.m. The film will begin at 8 pm.
