NEW MILFORD, N. J. -- New Milford community leaders lent several hands during a recent ShopRite campaign "Help Bag Hunger," which is part of a nationwide campaign to fill the shelves of food pantries.
Councilwomen Hedy Grant and Thea Sirocchi-Hurley were among the community leaders to help bag groceries at the New Milford ShopRite, one of 22 stores of Inserra Supermarkets to participate in the "Help Bag Hunger" campaign last month. While helpers were bagging groceries, associates collected monetary donations.
All proceeds are donated to help fill the shelves of food banks and charities. Inserra Supermarkets, which is a member of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative, participates in the event each September in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month.
Since the inception of ShopRite Partners in Caring in 1999, more than $40 million has been donated to more than 1,700 charities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Those charities include local food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child care centers, women’s shelters, senior citizens programs, drug rehab centers and more.
