BERGENFIELD, N.J. — The seven barbers at Cache Latino Barbershop in Bergenfield do everything Dominican style.

“We do a lot of designs with a razor and the outlines we do are more sharp,” said Manager Mike Hogan, 26, a lifelong borough resident.

“We also use different kinds of gels and pomades.”

The shop, celebrating its grand opening, has attracted both Latino and non-Latino customers.

Already, it’s popular with kids who come to get their soccer or football numbers shaved onto their heads, Hogan said.

Of course, he added, Cache Latino also fills a need in serving the significant Hispanic population in the area.

The staff hails from the Dominican Republic, Spain, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.

Owner Ricardo Peña of Teaneck, originally from Santo Domingo, has been a barber for more than 20 years.

His bright, gleaming shop also offers hair coloring, hot towel shaves, face and eyebrow waxing, manicures, pedicures, and shoulder and face massages.

Peña’s wife owns Elsa’s Restaurant, which features Dominican food, in Teaneck.

His nephew, Gary Sanchez, also originally from the Dominican Republic, is a catcher with the New York Yankees.

Everyone who walks into Ricardo Cache Latino is met with a wave of hospitality and offered a fresh cup of coffee.

“Sometimes we think we should call the place Café Latino,” Hogan quipped.
